[The dog balks at the hand initially, halting his progress but, after a tense moment of hesitation, its large, wet nose twitches and it inches forward, craning his neck to sniff at her. He seems cautious but, eventually, instinct takes over and he nudges his nose into her hand with a rough sort of enthusiasm, as though he can learn absolutely everything about her just by her scent.]
[Mary lets the dog sniff her for a long moment, not wanting to make a sudden movement in case he's jumpy or defensive. When she thinks he has gotten her scent down, she eventually scratches behind one ear, than the other, reaching up with both hands to stroke his neck and his back.]
