To the gallows with you! 5! sixthdeadliest September 20 2011, 00:58:21 UTC
Six leaned against the wall of his cell, resisting to bang his head back against it. He was going to be held indefinitely here. These people wouldn't give him the mercy of a swift death after what he'd been hired to do back when he was a mercenary.

Even worse, they'd drummed up bogus charges in order to kill one of the only people who truly mattered to him. She didn't have much time left. A few hours at best. Then she'd be gone, an innocent soul snuffed out before her time.

He couldn't see her either with their adjacent cells. So he had planted himself against the wall he shared with her cell.

"Holiday," he called, saying nothing else as he let her name carry his concern for her.

She... wasn't doing so well right now. People still needed her, Six, Rex, Beverly, but thanks to this mundane court system, she was about to be put to death. She had already called in every favor and she had already bitched to every person that came into earshot. Nothing was going to work today.

She heard his voice in the adjacent cell. This wasn't his fault. She couldn't be mad at him. Most importantly, she couldn't let him know how upset she felt right now. He needed to believe that she was alright. He needed to be comforted.

He didn't sound too great either, though.

"Yeah?" Her voice was soft, not scratchy or tense. Just warm.

He listened to her voice. Warm, nurturing. The same tone she used on Rex to keep him calm.

"How're you holding up?" he asked, wanting to hear more to make sure his suspicions were correct.

"I'm alright," she easily lied. He could probably see it, but she didn't really care. It was the thought that mattered... she supposed. She decided to elaborate more. "Jail isn't comfortable, but I guess we can't all be perfect."

Holiday hesitated, but she asked anyway. "... What about you?"

She wished she could see him.

Six's lips twitched into a brief smirk. "They're not designed to be like the Ritz." Then his face grew somber again. "I'm trying to figure a way out, but they learned from last time."

He lifted one hand, listening to the chain clanking. And here he was with no lockpicks or anything.

He set his hand down again. "I got you into this. I'm so sorry."

She heard the chain clank and she almost smirked. At least someone wasn't going to underestimate him. Though, she still didn't expect that to hold him, but she was getting her hopes up for her own freedom, either.

Then, she closes her eyes to his words, taking a deep breath. "This isn't your fault, Six. Don't let anyone tell you different."

He didn't see how. It was his own actions that had brought the situation about. However, it was pointless to argue.

He lifted his hand again, the chain once again jangling, and studied the manacle. He had to get free in order to get her out. But how was he supposed to get loose?

He sighed and put his hand to his head, trying to think but coming up empty. "What about you? Are you loose?"

"No chains, if that's what you mean."

They didn't seem to think she was dangerous enough to shackle, but she had been around the cell about five or six times. They were apparently careful to not leave any weak spots. Her hope had been pretty drained by this point, but she wasn't going to tell him that, either.

"Have you looked around yet for anything you can use?"

She probably had, but it was best that he asked. He needed to know what she'd been doing. He wished he could see her.

"I've looked," she told him, leaning against the wall, "Then I looked again. And again. They didn't underestimate us this time it seems."

Her voice was calm and soft. She had accepted it all.

Six sighed. Nothing. He'd suspected as much.

He inched closer to the edge of the cell, reaching his hand through the bars. There was just enough give to the chain to let him reach back towards her cell. His fingers barely reached the edge of the wall that separated them. She was probably so frightened, and all he could do was offer her a hand to hold.

She barely spotted the tip of his fingers through the bars. It wasn't like him to actively search for physical contact, but this situation was a little stressful. Maybe even Six felt like he needed support.

Holiday would gladly give that to him. Her hand easily reached out to his in a firm hold. She could use it, too, but it was more for him than anything.

He gave her hand a squeeze. He wished there was something he could tell her to reassure her.

The problem was that he knew how they would kill her. This was one of the places in the world that still practiced hanging. With hope, her neck would be snapped, killing her instantly. Otherwise, she'd be left to dangle as she strangled to death.

He squeezed his eyes shut. "Holiday, I want you to promise me something."

Now she was curious. There wasn't much left that she could do, but whatever it was, she'd do it. She squeezed his hand back in reassurance. "What is it?"

"When they start to lead you there, run. It's unlikely you'll get away--most likely shoot you--but it's guaranteed to be a faster death than what's planned for you."

She didn't like the idea of running. Especially when she knew that she wouldn't get away.

"Alright." She'd do it for him, though, if that's what he wanted. "You have to promise me something, too, though..."
