Late again, Annie came into the house and set her purse and coat down on the table just inside the door. It wasn't that she hadn't tried to be on time, she had. In fact, she'd left early, but things hadn't been going her way recently. Now she was stressed and since she'd said she was going to be home for dinner - a half hour earlier - she felt even guiltier.

"Hi, honey," she said with a smile as she came further into the house. "Sorry, I'm late."

When Annie called up to Clay's office to tell him what time she'd be done, he was actually very happy. They'd get to eat dinner at a normal time and together. Despite being married, it was something that had rarely happened lately.

He cooked like he normally did when Annie was going to be late, set the table poured the wine, served dinner and waited.

And Waited.

And Waited.

When he heard the car door a half hour after she was supposed to be home, he wasn't particularly surprised, and chastised himself for thinking she'd be home on time. He should have known better.

"I'm in the kitchen."

As she came into the kitchen, she leaned over and gave him a kiss on his cheek and looked at him apologetically. "I really am sorry. There was so much traffic and I had to leave late and---" Her expression said tons about her thoughts on the subject.

Clay recognized the cologne he smelled when Annie leaned over him to give him a kiss. It belonged to Jai. Usually, he didn't think much of it, as Annie and Jai were friends. Today though, it seemed like it was in her hair.

Clay nodded, "Dinner's a little cold."

"I'm sure that it'll be great," she said, turning her head, inadvertently swinging her hair directly into his face. "I'm just sorry I missed it while it was hot. I'm starving."

Annie was rarely that hungry.

"I hope so."

Now he was sure it was in her hair, "Wilcox dump a bottle of cologne on you today?"

"Hmm?" The question had come out of left field, so she hadn't had time to hide the almost-guilty look she had on her face. "What do you mean?" She sniffed her arm as if the scent was there... and it kind of was, though she'd taken a quick shower. "Huh. Must have bumped into him one too many times."

She flashed him a quick smile. "Dinner?"

"Yeah."

Clay went about eating his dinner, more because it was sitting in front of him for a half an hour more than anything else. He wasn't particularly hungry as his brain started working after catching that look on Annie's face. Something was going on, but for the life of him, he couldn't figure out what.

To show that she was, in fact, just as hungry as could be, Annie ate almost everything that he dished up for her. Big smiles as she drank her wine and when she was done, she said, "That was perfect, as usual."

Polishing off her wine, she said, "I'm so tired. I think I'm just going to take a shower and go to bed early." If he really could smell Jai on her, she didn't want that to end up in their bed.

It wasn't perfect, it was cold. He decided something about Annie was just, off and he couldn't put his finger on what it was. Instead of questioning her, he just nodded.

"I'll be up later."

"Okay," she agreed calmly, leaning over to kiss the top of his head before heading upstairs.

In the shower, Annie took a long time scrubbing down, washing her hair and even shaving. When he finally came up, she was reading in bed, dressed in her usual of yoga pants and the Harvard shirt.

It took Clay a good three hours to go to bed. He realized during that time, that he and Annie had been spending less and less time together. Until this point, he blamed their jobs. Now, he wasn't sure.

Once in their room, he took a shower and got in bed without a word.

"Hey." All gentle smiles, Annie set her book down and looked at him. "Are you okay? I know I was late and I said I was sorry, but you've been really quiet. What were you doing down there for three hours?"

"Trying to figure out what's going on with you. You're later than you say more often than not."

"Ten minutes?" She frowned at him. "What's gotten into you?"
