[Elle looked at Ben a bit concerned. Actually, she was pretty concerned, but freaking out wasn't going to help.] Whatever happens, I'm going to help you out however I can. You know that.

[Freaking out might not help, but he's doing it anyway. Ben's form of freaking out means he's curled up in a ball on the sofa with his arms wrapped around his head.] I can't find Zev, Elle. At all.

But if all that's left is the Predator, then I belong in a cage, Elle. Because the Predator is a scary scary animal with no filter except the one that Guriel puts there. And he can't babysit me 24/7.

Welll...the Predator's not here now, is he? And if I remember right, he only shows up when you really freak out or get angry. [And both of those things did tend to happen, but she was not going to let Ben torment himself like this.] Let's try to look at this logically. When was the last time you remember Zev being around?

He's been really shy since the thing in the pits. [Ben thinks.] He came out during the moon, for sure. Maybe... once? Since then?

Well, that's a good start. Anything weird-er than usual happen to you since then? Or to Guriel?

[He huffs out a laugh that's far more bitter than usual.] Oh, you know. I got tazed in the park by an overzealous cop the other day, which made the Predator come out. Guriel stopped It before It did anything bad, but... seems like when I wolf anymore, half the time it's that damn Thing instead of Zev.

It scares us all, Elle. I can't remember what happens when I'm It instead of Zev, and neither can Zev.

Is it possible that you've [airquotes] matured to the point where Zev doesn't believe you need him? [That was a longshot, but anything was technically possible.]

No, nonononono, because that's ridiculous. Sometimes being able to check out safely is the only thing that keeps me sane.

I think... [Thinking it through.] The Predator uses the wolf body, you know? So Zev feels responsible. And maybe he thinks if he doesn't come out, that It won't.

Well, yeah...that's ridiculous. [Some would say the idea of talking about werewolves at all was ridiculous, but her life had grown more complicated.]

Maybe he needed a vacation?

Maybe he's the one checking out? [Ben considers that for a moment.] You know, it makes sense. He's not real old, in the great scheme of things, still a puppy, really, and things have been stressful and scary of late.

[He frowns.] Maybe Guriel and I have been relying on him too much for comfort and not realizing that he needs comforting too.

[It would be nice if it were that easy.] You and Guriel have been going through so much lately. Maybe you should take a vacation.

Last time we tried to have one, we ended up taking out a hidden Mexican Black Market op. Vacations aren't, for us.

But letting Zev be the one to be petted and fussed over might do the trick. Assuming I can get him back.

Come on, Zev. All for one. Pack, right? Still counts when you're the one who's hurting. Maybe especially when you're the one who's hurting.
