8;4... he's 75% aware captoftardis November 4 2011, 04:54:43 UTC
The Doctor runs his hands through his hair in frustration, looking at the map on the wall covered in push-pins with locations.

"We've already lost 3 people... it's only logical that you or I are next. Someone's targeting us."

Gotcha - rolled a 6 for River's awareness. Probably teeter between 50 and 75% riverborntorun November 4 2011, 05:51:09 UTC
River crossed her arms and sighed, attempting to exhale the building paranoia within her gut. There was something wrong - not just that someone wanted her or her partner dead, but something about this place. It certainly felt real, but it was too... ordinary. Desks and bulletin boards and maps and files. There should be buttons or levers or something...

"But for what? What do they get out of this? How can we stop them - the others barely even saw it coming."

oops, he's not 75% aware, but 75% affected. And sorry for slow tagging. Out of town right now. captoftardis November 5 2011, 05:10:31 UTC
"They're leading us on a wild goose chase," He felt compelled to say through time and space! "which will somehow lead them into a trap. I haven't quite figured out if they're just sending one member to do the dirty work to coax us out, or what. Other than being a part of our team, I'm not putting my figure on what exactly their patterns are... unfortunately."

He sighed and flopped down in a chair. "I almost want to say let's go out and try and find them before they find us."

Right, crap. I meant affected as well. -_- And no worries, totally understandable riverborntorun November 5 2011, 21:17:29 UTC
River scoffed at him. "What, so we can die together in a blaze of glory? How romantic." Why did she jump to that word? They were only partners, after all. Years of teamwork and putting their lives in each other's hands every day certainly forged a strong bond, but it wasn't anything like that. Not in this universe.

"Though I suppose we'd save the department money with a double funeral."

"Only for you, sweetie." They always had this flirty bantering, right?

"They've already approved a safe house for us - ridiculous, I know, but at this rate..." He rubbed his chin in thought. "They caught Tyler on the west side... Pond eastwards, and Jones also on the east side. But there's just no pattern other than us being the targets. Ohh, this is frustrating." And slightly exciting. He was a bit manic at times.

That did form a tiny smile on her face, if only for a brief moment. "You sure know how to treat a girl."

River quirked an eyebrow, moving to lean her hip against the arm of the chair he was in. "That and the fact that he leaves almost no trace. He's giving the analysts hell in the evidence lab. And you sound almost a little too giddy about this, dear."

"I like a challenge."

He sighed and grabbed his jacket. "C'mon, it's nearly midnight... Allons-y~!" He paused, "I actually don't know any French beyond that."

He cut the lights and followed her out of the building where some officers lingered and handed him an envelope - a pathetic attempt at keeping their safe house knowledge limited. "I suppose this is our home away from home. Hope you don't have to feed any pets."

"Voulez vou coucher avec moi?" She replied promptly, not entirely sure where that came from. Shrugging it off, she picked up her own jean jacket and pulled it around her shoulders, following him outside.

"Weeell, there's Jim the fish," River began, "But he's fat so he can go without me for a few days. Besides, I left a note on Delia's desk to contact my neighbor. She look after him. He likes her better than me anyway." ....It's a fish, River. If your life weren't threatened right now one might suggest a social life.

She frowned as they walked to the car it's his but she likes to try and drive from time to time. "...I can't believe there's a man trying to kill us and we're basically having a glorified sleepover."

He laughed loudly and heartedly at her comment. "Ok, lay off the pop songs."

When they reached the car, he eyed her. Of course she wasn't going to drive, even if it was late and traffic would be down. He was feeling stubborn.

"Glorified sleepover with guards!"

And when they reached their destination, he frowned at the tiny warehouse. "I hope it's bigger on the inside."

"Hah, make me," She challenged him playfully; deep down she was quite worried about their situation, but wasn't showing at the moment. Coping mechanisms, lovely things.

And damn his eying. She frowned; any other time she would've fought harder, but not tonight. Looking glum, she retreated to the passenger seat. At least that meant radio privileges for a short time.

"What, you don't like an audience? Where's your inner exhibitionist?"

She leaned over and glanced out the window to take a look of her own. "Yeah, but it's a nice color at least?" She fell quiet for a moment, a feeling creeping up on the back of her neck. Was it the color of the warehouse, or...? No. Something else was tugging at her senses.

"...I think we should get inside."

They strolled inside, but not before the Doctor glanced around their surroundings. Glad to know they were being guarded, because honestly, it looked like no one was around. He assumed they had assigned areas of hiding out and observing but he was never given details in fears of potentially ruining things.

He followed her inside after unlocking the front door, and blinked at the dim lighting. "Charming." He was being sarcastic as he looked around. "How do they expect us to sleep here? It's a bit creepy, yeah?" He waited for something to come around the corner or out of the boxes that were stacked. But in a room that branched off from the main enteranceway were two cots and the suitcases they were asked to packed. At least this room was made up to look a little more homey.

"Oh, I've seen worse..." River commented airily. Images of a dark and gloomy orphanage danced across her mind, and a little girl hiding in a hallway - then it was gone, faster than it had come. "But yes - I'm almost expecting a possessed child on a tricycle to come barrel us down..."

Upon entering the slightly more welcoming room, River slid her coat off her shoulder and tossed it onto one of the empty cots as a symbol of claim. She'd been to safe houses before, but this was her first time actually being a resident. "Shoe's on the other foot now, huh," she commented, pushing the heel of her boot with the other foot to kick them off.

"That's the assumption." There was at least small lights by the cots as he turned one on and followed suit of River and kicked off his shoes and pulled off his tie and jacket.

Lying back, he flipped open the small notebook he carried and reread his notes on the case, hoping something would jump out at him. He hoped River didn't mind the light... he was a terrible sleeper anyway. He never slept much, which he never really had an explanation for. He seemed to function just fine on 3, strangely enough.

River didn't mind the light, she wasn't tired yet anyway. Her mind was too full of questions. But she was going to at least prepare for bed. Reaching behind herself to unhook her bra beneath her shirt (she certainly wasn't planning to sleep with it on), she looked over at the Doctor reviewing his notes. "D'you want to talk it out again? See if we make any new connections?"

He glanced over and watched her pull her bra through her shirtsleeve before finally replying, "Sure!"

He sat up and flipped to the beginning of the notebook, "Back in September, we started working on the Organized Crime Division and tracking a group called the 'Daleks' - which we never figured out what that meant - who seemed to have been planning a terrorist attack. We've really had no luck at tracking down any of the members, but have been successful at finding a couple of their informants..." He sighed and placed his chin in the palm of his hand.

"Only to have them end up dead, followed by the officers who've been on assignment with us," River continued, laying down on her stomach after putting her bra aside. With it, she tried to push aside the bittersweet memories of her comrades.

"And they're way too good at covering their tracks - order forms for whatever they're planning are either completely missing or written in code that we haven't cracked yet. Not to mention we've got Mayor Saxon breathing down our necks about keeping this quiet until after the election. He doesn't want anything to sour his campaign." She shook her head.

"Back to the Daleks thing - why do they call themselves that? Do you think it's part of their code?"
