"It has to be. There's no other way to explain it. I mean, we've ran loads of searches and haven't found anything that makes any sense. I've spent hours trying to decipher their code as well, but I don't think it's remotely English, French, or Spanish... Maybe it's an acronym of some sort?"
Absent-mindedly he pulled on his earlobe, lost in thought. "Tyler had said she thought she found a lead, but I've searched through her stuff and don't know what she thought she had found.... and then we lose her. Pond, I think, was in the wrong place at the wrong time..." Again, he sighed.
"Ugh this is so frustrating!" She grumbled, smacking her pillow. "Why can't they just be dumb, average criminals who can't code their way out of a cardboard box?!"
At the remark about Pond, River flinched, looking away. "Don't....don't tell me that..." Her stomach felt ill at the thought, though she couldn't quite explain why.
And then he immediately felt guilty, knowing that River had worked with Amy on many cases and were probably quite close friends. Damn those Daleks, causing nothing but frustrations and sadness. It shouldn't happen like this!
"Maybe all of them had seen something we haven't. Why they wouldn't share is beyond me, but... Oh I don't know!" He flopped back onto his back, staring up at the ceiling.

River had, in fact, been quite close with Amy Pond - it wasn't an instantaneous connection when they met, but it was a connection nonetheless. Next to her partner, Amelia Pond was probably the closest person River could call a friend. And now she was dead.
Her voice a little tight, she spoke slowly. There was something she hadn't told him yet. "Pond... Amy...She called me. The day before. On my voicemail, she... said she needed money. Fast. I....I thought she was joking, you know? Another one of her pranks, b-but then..."
Oh hell she was about to cry. Why now? She'd held out this long, why did her resolve weaken now? "...She was so young, you know. I mean, brilliant, but still she was so young..."
Aw, poor River ;_; captoftardisNovember 8 2011, 05:17:33 UTC
He frowned and felt terrible for River. Although he would never admit to it, he had shed a few tears of Rose Tyler's loss.
And then he half sat up and threw his notebook at River, "Why didn't you say anything? Do you still have the message? Are there any hints in there?" He nearly toppled out of his cot with this new revelation.
No universe will let her be with her mom, damnit. Aaanyway, back to the story...riverborntorunNovember 8 2011, 05:27:11 UTC
"Oi! Bloody hell!" River sniped as the notebook hit her. Her brow furrowed somewhat angrily, she pushed herself to sit up and snatched her jacket, digging her cellular phone out of the pocket and throwing it into his lap. "Maybe because I was in fucking mourning, did you think of that?"
A mix of irritation and sorrow, she quickly moved to lay on her side, her back towards her partner. "Going to sleep now," she muttered, though it was highly unlikely. "And good luck trying to get anything off that - It's just her voice and then this static-y garble at the end."
Aw, I didn't even think about that! I'M SO MEAN ;_;captoftardisNovember 8 2011, 05:48:04 UTC
After about 5 minutes of pressing buttons, the Doctor padded quietly over to River and sat down on the floor next to her cot.
"I'm sorry." He really was. "I'm so sorry, River. We've both lost some important people in our lives these past few weeks, and it's taking a toll on us. I can tell you've lost weight... and I pretty much don't sleep at all, although that never really seemed to be an issue for me."
Dawww! It could be worse, you could be Steven Moffat :PriverborntorunNovember 8 2011, 06:06:35 UTC
River's eyes were closed, but she's still very much awake. She feared opening them and bursting into tears that were already slightly starting to form beneath her eyelids.
A small, wry laugh escaped her and she shook her head, rubbing at her eyes. "Any other girl would be chuffed to hear she's lost weight, but I damn near want to slug you." Her eyes were watery as she moved off the bed to sit next to him, her back against the cot. "I hate you sometimes; you're all brains and no heart and messing with people's feelings is great in the interrogation room but it's a shitty quality in a friend!"
Her face was flushed with anger and pain, and her lip began to tremble. She can't do this. She can't be weak. But before she could stop herself, River leaned against her partner's shoulder, clinging to him. Even if she still felt miffed at him, she needed something to cling on to in this world. He was all she had left.
hahaha, oh man... captoftardisNovember 8 2011, 06:25:47 UTC
Before he could stop himself, he wrapped an arm around her and rested his cheek to her head. Her comment about having no heart stung and after sitting there in silence he cleared his throat. "I cried when Rose was killed. I know everyone gave me shit for not being at her funeral, but I just couldn't go. I went to her grave that night and said my goodbyes after I knew everyone had left."
He was the leader of their team, and he didn't like looking weak. He definitely didn't like people who had looked up to him in respect now look at him with pity. So he did what he did best, just shut himself down emotionally and focus on work.
River sniffed, letting quiet tears fall. The Doctor's arm around her brought some comfort during the silence. She had wondered why he hadn't shown at Rose's funeral, but she had enough of an idea not to ask him personally. It seemed too intrusive.
"At...at least you said goodbye," She wavered. "I k-keep holding on to that stupid message, thinking I'm gonna hear something new. Amy was probably the...closest thing I had to a family, and now I'm alone. It's so bloody selfish, I know but I hate this feeling. If we could just...find this bastard then maybe I'd feel okay again." River had always been exceptional at bottling things up - sure she hinted now and then if something was on her mind, but her thoughts and secrets were hers and hers alone. Her burden.
After some time, she adjusted her head, brushing at his now slightly tear-stained shirt. "I um....I'm sorry," she began. "About when I... look, I don't really hate you, you just....make me so angry sometimes."
He smiled softly, then laughed lightly, "You're not the first to tell me that."
He held up her mobile phone, "Can I listen to that message? There might be something there..." He handed it to her and waited for her to pull it up.
Once it started playing, he practically had the phone glued to his ear, as close as he was holding it. His eyebrows furrowed together when the message ended and he hit replay. "It's really poor quality...." He glanced at her, "Have you had this analyzed at all?"
"And I probably won't be the last," River added with a tiny chuckle.
"Oh, yes, of course. Sorry, I forgot about the voicemail code," she replied sheepishly, taking her mobile phone from him and quickly punching in the correct keys. She handed the phone back to him swiftly - she couldn't bear to hear Amy's voice again, not at this moment.
She sat with her knees lifted up slightly to her chest, leaning her chin on her knees. "No, I haven't," she admitted. "I did send a copy of it to Mickey down in Analysis but I don't know if he's gotten to it yet."
A sudden banging from outside made River jump, and her hand flew to her gun. "Did you hear that?"
He was just as startled, and quickly hopped to his feet. "I don't want to sound too pessimistic, but that doesn't sound like a good thing." He also didn't want to mention he didn't have a gun on him, it was something he hated being associated with and somehow managed to make it this far not needing one, or only using blank bullets.
In the shadows he made his way to the window, back against the wall as he glanced out. "I see movement..." And then the window shattered with bullets coming through. "Get down!" He was relatively safe, with the wall shielding him, but he wasn't able to see where she was.
River bit back the urge to snipe 'No shit sherlock' and crept onto her heels, head tilted to listen closely for any noise.
"Doctor!" She exclaimed as hot metal tore through the wall. She dove onto the floor, partially to avoid the hail of bullets, and partially to reach him and make sure he was safe.
"Ungh!" She felt to the floor, a pain shooting through her arm. She glanced down, rivulets of blood streaming from her arm onto her white shirt. "Doctor..."
The firing had stopped and the Doctor finally spotted River sprawled on the floor, some glass covering her but also noticing the blood on her arm.
"River!" He crawled on the floor over to her. "Where were you hit? Please tell me just your arm!" He began brushing the glass off of her and examined her arm.
"Can you still move it?" He began tugging at his own shirt, trying to tear off some of the fabric to wrap her arm and control the bleeding.
"We've already lost 3 people... it's only logical that you or I are next. Someone's targeting us."
