Doctor. The Doctor. She couldn't leave him, not like this.... "Y..Yes, just there I think," River muttered, watching him with fearful eyes. Not from the idea of dying, but the idea of leaving him behind....
"Barely," She grimaced, struggling to do so. "Least he didn't get my shooting arm.....but holy TARDIS that hurts..."
Thank goodness for thin-fabric dress shirts and his strange love of layering clothes. He had managed to rip off a fair amount of his shirt and began tightly wrapping her arm. "Our safe house isn't so safe anymore... We're going to have to figure out how to defend ourselves."
As he finished that sentence, he heard screeching of more tires and voices outside and what sounded like reloading of guns. "That's our cue to run!" He took her hand and they quickly ran out of the room.
"Somehow... I don't think stripping for them is going to be effective, love," River teased through the throbbing pain in her arm as he wrapped it. Coping mechanism. Her gun nearby, she patted it with her good hand. She'd show them defense, all right.
Only there wasn't any time for that, nor any time for River to argue with him. She only had enough to clasp her gun in her hand before they took off running. A mix of carpet and glass scrunched beneath her feet and she'd likely have more wounds to tend to later, but the pain on her soles hadn't sunk in yet. Adrenaline, and almost a feel of exhilaration coursed through River Song as she ran, hand in hand with him. Her doctor.
"Where are we going?" She panted as they flew past the back door and out into the queer stillness of the night.
"I don't know yet!" He winced briefly as his his feet too were cut into by the glass. He frowned knowing they'd probably leave a trail behind as they ran.
Out a back door, they glanced around and as quietly as possible, ran down the alley. Out in the street, he noticed the lights had already been blown out. He thought that was a good thing before more firing started. "This way!"
He held her hand tightly as she began opening fire against their attackers. They came across another alleyway and for some reason he felt compelled to turn down it. He couldn't explain this pull until they reached the end. In the corner there stood a tall blue box labeled "Police Public Call Box".
The streets were much darker than she was used to, and River's only solace was the company she had at her side. They'd figure a way out of this, surely. More firing, and an instinct clicked in River - she grabbed her gun and returned fire at their assailants, strafing down the street and into another alleyway - where the hell was he leading them?
"What, we're the police and we're gonna use a box to call the other police?" She scoffed, looking at the construction. "It looks like a junkyard piece - what's it doing down here?" She whispered, pausing to lean against it. She was out of breath and the adrenaline was slowing down.
He shook his head and placed his hand flat on the door. "I know this thing... Earlier you said a word; a strange word that didn't really make sense. TARDIS, I believe. This thing... I think is a TARDIS."
He pushed on the door and it opened. His eyes widened in amazement and everything came back to him. "I'm the Doctor!"
"I said what?" River looked at him in the dim alley, her brow furrowed. Something about the word seemed familiar, but she wouldn't just shout out something random like that. "No I didn't, that's rubbish. TARDIS isn't a proper word..."
She turned her head and watched him push the door open, streams of light emanating from inside. Was there a lamp or something in the box? She stepped forward curiously, feeling almost drawn to look inside...
A loud clanging of what may have been a trash can falling over in the alley shook River out of her daze. "I don't care WHO you are, just hide!" She pushed him forward into the box, jumping in behind him and slamming the door shut.
He continued to look around in amazement. The place was bigger on the inside than the outside - impressive! "River, you don't remember anything?" He ran his fingers along the rails as he made his way to the center console.
Oh, he'll show her an escape all right! Fingers deftly pressed buttons in a sequence he acted like he knew all his life and the TARDIS whirled and moaned as it took off.
Her back up against the door, River slumped to the floor, looking up. Awe overwhelmed her expression - this was much, much larger than she expected. More than it seemed possible, even. "I remember being shot at!" She exclaimed, lifting her foot to pick at the glass embedded there.
As the strange box-vehicle took off, the roar of the engines shot through her body, eliciting an unusual reaction from River. She began to cry.
He glanced over to where River was and saw the tears rolls down her face. "River!" He scrambled over to her, but not without wincing from a couple pieces of glass still embedded in his feet.
Quickly lowering himself to his knees, he cupped her face in his hands. "You're safe, River. You're safe. Alive!" Using his thumbs, he wiped away some of her tears and attempted to smooth down her mass of curls.
What was wrong with her? She was crying over nothing... No, not nothing. Everything was wrong. "Th..The sound is all wrong," she said through her tears, one hand moving to touch his when he cupped her face. At least that felt okay. Good, even. His touch grounded her for a moment. "Make it stop, I don't like it...."
Images began to flash through her mind, some familiar, some not. Most of them were hazy, slowly coming into focus.... "..Doctor..?"
"It'll stop as soon as it locks onto a safe location out in space. We have to leave this place, as toxic as it is."
He witnessed a display of emotions on her face, leading him to believe she too wondered what in the universe just happened. He wasn't sure himself. "Yes, Doctor... 'Ello!" He wiggled his fingers and gave a short wave as if they were meeting for the first time. "Are you alright? Well beyond the glass embedded in your feet."
River stared at him for a moment, with almost childlike wonder, her own hand slowly waving at him in return. Then she shook her head as if she was waking up from a dream, finding her voice again. "Y...Yes, I'm fine. I'm fine now."
Suddenly, she pounced upon the Doctor, pushing him onto his back and holding him down with a malevolent gleam in her eye. "The glass isn't much, Doctor, it's you you should be concerned about."
She had moved so quickly and without warning, the Doctor had been completely caught offhand. She had him pinned to the ground in such a way, he felt the glass shards cut into his feet more, causing him to wince at that more than being knocked down. "River, what are you on about!? It's me!"
She had a very wild look in her eyes and due to the adrenaline still being pumped into her, was possessing quite impressive strength over him. If she were anyone else, he would've fought back more, but this time he hoped he could talk himself out of it.
"Yes I know it's you, that's exactly the point," River replied smugly. He looked almost beautiful when she had him like this. Pity he wouldn't last much longer. She had an objective after all.
"Now, would you like it fast or slow? Not like you have much control here, but just because I've come to kill you doesn't mean I need to be impolite."
"We've already lost 3 people... it's only logical that you or I are next. Someone's targeting us."
