Happy Birthday!

Jun 30, 2004 14:17

32 years ago today, Josh Davis, later to be known as DJ Shadow, was born. Since he is my favorite artist or whatever as of now, I would like to greet him thorough this medium: Happy birthday, Shadow!
To celebrate his much appreciated birth, I would like to invite all who care to tell us their favorite Shadow track, album and/ or meme.

Favorite Shadow track: Midnight In A Perfect World. A touching, hypnotizing lament. I strongly advise anyone who cares about music, sampling and/or visual representation to watch its beautiful video (slsk it).

Favorite Shadow set: BrainFreeze pt. 2. The now classic set recorded by Shadow and colleague Cut Chemist at a practice session is a fun, funny and funky mix that blows my mind each and every time I listen to it. Crate digging at its best, the necessary James Brown, four hand scratching, impressive mixing technique, flow and a tongue in cheek.

Fave track: hell, that's a tough one. Righbt now I'd say "What Does Your Soul Look Like, Part 2", but ask me again tomorrow and it'll be something else.

Fave picture of him is the one from Urb that's on the wall next to my computer right this minute; he's in his home studio looking distracted with a pen in his mouth and sampling something off an album called "The 1980s: Countdown to Armageddon."

And another killing video - I was astonished the first time I saw it.

The entire Private Press album is brilliant start to finish, so it's hard to pick a favorite. I'll go with "You Can't Go Home Again" - that sweeping part at the end with the strings and the repeating keyboard riff is really moving.
