ten days ago i got on a train and found i had grossly underestimated california's aesthetic bounty. i watched the reflection of a man pick its nose and ears, furiously, for eleven hours, and then i walked through a beautiful train station into hideous los angeles. i saw a fella stalled by a beggar outside and then i lived with him for a week. we ( Read more... )

Did I never tell you about adopting a dead manatee?

It happened in second grade. The class was psyched to help the plight of the might sea cow, so much so we picked out our very own and sent in fifty dollars so that we might have an autographed picture of it and our very own Friend of a Manatee bumper sticker.

Instead we got back a letter saying, "We're sorry, Jimmy got hit by a boat propeller last week."

This experience made the one I'd have fifteen years later of "adopting" an eight year old Nicaraguan girl much more interesting.

I do so enjoy the thought of your college major being "dead baby"

this dead manatee thing, especially re: preston's story, is really depressing. why would they even tell your manatee was dead? i mean, okay, if you adopt a nicaraguan i can understand that it's a specific person; but come on, it was *really* a specific manatee? named jimmy? honestly? and they couldn't just tell a bunch of second graders a different manatee was named jimmy?

perhaps they want you to understand the true plight of the manatees, and that this eminent danger they refer to is so real. but man.

finally, i like you taking trips and sharing.

I don't remember his name, but is was a specific one. They all had their own backstories and personality profiles and etc. We picked the wacky manatee.

The wacky manatee got smashed in the head by a fishin' boat.

Let this be a lesson to all (Jody).
