Day 5 - New season of television ramblings

Sep 13, 2013 23:12

I dropped a lot of shows last year (Once Upon a Time, Castle, Bones, NCIS, Grimm, Suburgatory, etc.) so I was really hoping there was going to be a lot of new television shows I'd want to watch this season, but, nope! It doesn't seem like there will be. Thus, my television viewing is going to be a bit sparse this year, I think.

What I'm watching this coming season, at least for now )

I'm hoping I love The Good Wife more this season too, because it does have lots of amazing female characters.

Have you read any of the spoilers for the upcoming season of The Mentalist? If you haven't, they might help you decide whether to watch. I'm really hoping they're true.

I'm also hoping Sleepy Hollow is good! The one review I read (somewhere...) sounded promising. But I guess we'll see. Still not convinced they'll be able to sustain the premise for more than a season, but I'll worry about that after I see it.

I told my family Haven was back tonight! And then we looked. And looked. And looked. And it turns out that while it's back in the US tonight, it's not back HERE until December. Ouch.

So you also didn't like it as much last season? I wanted to, but it just didn't quite work for me.

Nope. I generally am very spoiler avoidant. Do you recommend reading them? (And if so, where would I find them? I don't generally seek out things.) If you're hoping they're true, that sounds like a good thing, and maybe I will continue, then. :)

I figure I'll give it a chance at least. I mean, what do I have to lose? I do tend to like fantasy-type stories, so it should, theoretically, be something I'd enjoy.

That sucks! The wait we had already seemed more than long enough! Do you have any idea why it is so delayed for Canadian viewers? Usually the airings are closer, aren't they?

Yeah, not as much. I mean, it had its moments, but overall I didn't enjoy it quite as much.

Well, the spoiler I'm thinking of is quite vague. (There's a much bigger spoiler out there as well, but I don't think that matters as much for deciding whether you want to watch?) I'll put it here under spoiler tags, and you can decide if you want to read it. (I'm not sure spoiler tags work in email, though, so stop reading now if you're reading in email and don't want to be spoiled!)

[Spoiler (click to open)]Apparently they've promised that the Red John storyline will be wrapped up in the first half of the season (finally!), and the second half of the season will be about Jane coming to terms with it and figuring out what to do next. We'll see if they actually do it, though.

I won't put the big spoiler here, but if you want it, let me know.

Yeah, exactly. At most you lose an hour or two of time watching, and if it's really bad, you can always turn it off, right?

No idea! It's usually not this far off. I may have found another way to watch it so I don't have to ( ... )

Yeah, that's about how I felt.

Huh. Maybe I might watch then? I don't know. And, yes, we'll see if it actually happens. (If you're willing, I'm fine with knowing the big spoiler. As it might make me more willing to watch the show versus giving up? Maybe?)

Exactly.

That's so odd! At least you got to watch it! I still haven't gotten to watch it yet, despite being in the US. It is on my list of things to do ASAP, as I can just feel it taunting me from my DVR. :P

Oh, I really like Grimm! Why did you drop it (just out of curiosity).

And I couldn't agree more about Arrow. I dislike the main love interest quite a bit, but I love everything else about the show. Especially Felicity & Digg (and I have a crazy soft spot for John Barrowman)

[Spoiler (click to open)]I didn't like the whole amnesia story to start off the season. I had liked that they had brought Juliette in at the end of the first season, and I was looking forward to her actually being a part of things, and then they backtracked. And I didn't like it. Not just the wasted potential (in my mind) but also just the actual storyline.

John Barrowman is a bit over the top for me, but I'm fine with him. (Just as the lead is a bit stiff for me, but I'm fine with him.) I'm hoping for more of the action stories and fewer of the love stories this season. It's a fun, escapist-type show. :D

Oh, yeah....Juliette's storyline was really bad, and they took FOREVER to resolve it. Though they've gotten past that and I'm looking forward to seeing how they integrate her into everything now.

That's exactly how I see Arrow! Escapist, fun, and just so *pretty*...I find the people and the cinematography so visually compelling...I love to watch.

Bummer on not getting new Haven at the same time as the US. I watched last night - and totally enjoyed it. It's not a complete reboot, but - minor spoiler that must be totally obvious by now - by screwing with the barn, they messed everythig up and nothing is happening to template anymore. Which means open ended story telling is in play. Yay ( ... )

Oh, I'm in the US. Just Jen above is a poor Canadian in this respect. :P (I'm in Western NY, so practically, but not quite, in Canada.) I just haven't gotten a chance to watch the episode because of life getting in the way. I'm glad you liked it. You bring the tally up to two people who liked it to one who didn't. Open-ended storytelling possibilities are a good thing ( ... )

I am also totally underwhelmed with new shows this fall. But ... the last new comedy I cared about was The New Girl... so... I don't tend to get excited about mainstream comedy.

I watched Suburgatory and Modern Family as my last comedies (and the last comedy I adored was Better Off Ted), so I understand not getting excited over comedies. For me, a lot of it is that I don't care for embarrassment humor. It makes me squirm to see someone embarrassed on screen. Yet that seems to be a very popular thing to do to characters in comedies. Plus, I tend to prefer dry/verbal humor to slapstick/action humor, which, again, is not generally in line with comedies.

I heard good things about Suburgatory but never got around to watching it. I totally agree about the embarrassment humor. I don't like that and I don't like humor that is all about someone being or acting stupid or ignorant. I remember as a kid, my parents watching 'Everybody Loves Raymond' and hating it because the entire premise of the show is everyone is stupid and awful. I think that's why I tend to like British shows, they are often more about what is said.
