Cookbooks I can't live without

I pride myself on my carefully curated cookbook collection. For a bibliophile and foodie like me, it's hard to resist the allure glossy pages and colorful photos that promise treats from famous restaurants and distant countries. For baking, King Arthur Flour Whole Grain Baking. Makes baking with whole grains very clear - and delicious even for those who don't like whole grain. Thus far, we've had only one dud, the brownie recipie.

Jeremy really likes the Bitman, I find it frustrating just because it's a little too conventional for us. We got the vegitarian Bitman for our wedding and I have high hopes for it!

I will have to see if some of those are at the library! I like How To Cook Everything Vegetarian for basically the same reasons you like How To Cook Everything, and I got lucky, because when C and I moved in together I got his cookbooks. The one I really like is Madhur Jaffrey's World Vegetarian which is my go-to book for curries.

We have a lot of cookbooks, but the recipes are a just a little too expensive to make.

One thing I really want is a good bread making cookbook.

I do really love the big old classic The Joy of Cooking. Some other cookbooks I refer to a lot are my collection of Frugal Gourmet's works and my piles of back issues of Cook's Illustrated and Saveur. I tend to be a very experimental, freeform cook, since I learned as a child, but

Vegetarian Planet by Didi Emmons really expanded my perceptions when I was first starting out cooking. Although the book is a little nutritionally outdated (emphasis on carbohydrates for the meal, avoidance of fat), she has a great focus on multicultural ingredients and wonderful little sidebar stories.
