For those wondering what it's like in New York after Hurricane Sandy's arrival, we got a helluva lot of storm surge. Lots of flooding, including the FDR Drive as far north as 34th Street, Battery Park and lots of NJ and Long Island. Power was out below 39th Street, and transformers were exploding. Subway tunnels got flooded with corrosive salt ( Read more... )

Oh my goodness. Amidst all of that mayhem and destruction, I'm really glad that you're all right.

*hugs you*

Thanks! I've been watching news conferences this morning, and it looks like our power will be okay. Lower Manhattan will take longer. We really dodged a bullet in my area. :P

So good to hear from you. I have been wondering how you have been faring. There are some pretty amazing pics of water inundation in the financial district up on the web.

Stay safe, warm and dry.

Thanks, L. It's amazing to think how widespread the coverage was for this storm. Other Australian friends and Europeans have been checking in, too. But it's true that for NYC this is a historical amount of damage. Our Governor thinks we can't go on the assumption that this won't continue, so the repairs will be made with that in mind.

((((Hugs))) I am so glad you are all right!

I have been in NY for business for three days, and luckily my return flight was on Friday night. At first I wished I had more time in NY so I could see everyone, but now I think I was lucky that I couldn't stay for a couple more days...

Ellen, I'm glad you missed the storm, too! I have a Swedish friend who was due to fly in on Monday, but happily she was able to put off the trip a few days. Even so, this is not going to be a normal NYC for awhile.

I couldn't change the dates, because I had to give an award to my own surgeon, and the ceremony was on 25th, but due to work issues I couldn't stay for a longer period of time and had to fly back on 26th, so I could be at work on 28th. I guess I was lucky. How is it now?:

We're still in flux here. No power below 39th Street or for 90 percent of Long Island, lots of flooded subway tunnels that still need to be pumped out. Some limited subway service starts tomorrow, but nothing below 34th Street. My neighborhood is pretty normal, but we have awhile to go before things are more normal.

((((Meryl)))). Good to hear you're doing OK! I'm sorry for all the damages and destruction Sandy caused in NYC and elsewhere, but I know you are a tough bunch and will weather the storm aftermath like you took on the storm.

Thanks, Maeg. We're fine in my neighborhood, but others are really in a bad way. No one really seriously thought that the water damage would be so great. There were fires out in Queens, too. It's a good thing we have very well trained first responders. It will be awhile before we can be back to normal as a city.
