Hooking up is kissing, but it carries connotations of either a) a short french kiss or b) people who make out with each other but who are not serious about a relationship, i.e. are not "dating" or "seeing each other," especially polyamorous types.

NY teen slang is a bit complicated...

i know you were freaked out, i'm only joking about your being a bad kisser. you're an AMAZING kisser marianne. joe lupo said so.

i'm your friend, but i have to be honest: your cousin is very strange, and some of the people you hang out with are certainly not outstanding people. the jersey boys were cool, though.

(currently i can't see your cousin's comment bc i'm on a school computer and it's blocking it out)
