Trying Something New (Exercise Blog #1)

I'm out of shape. And I'm tired of being out of shape. Everyone hits these moments every now and then, myself included, and I always push them aside. I'm too busy, I say, or I can't afford a gym membership, or the weather's bad. But my main reason for not exercising is that, to misquote the Prophet Chuck from Supernatural--exercising is hard. It's ( Read more... )

I have postural hypo-tension - if I get up from a squatting or lying down position too fast I black out or pass out so I know EXACTLY what you mean. I managed to find a great yoga teacher who was able to work with me on this, but right after Christmas she had surgery and won't be teaching again for a while.

I've recently started roller skating. It's working out without realizing it. A friend of mine is on the local roller derby team and we go so she can practice and laugh at me. I'm not bad but I can usually do only two or three laps at a time. It's not expensive ($8 for 3 hours of skating) and fun. And I'm no skinny-minnie (neither is my derby friend, btw). I only go once every two weeks or so, which means I haven't lost any weight but I feel better after I go for a few days.

(I just went skating last night, which explains my skating "high")

Ouch. The last time I went roller skating I fell down four times. Granted, this was a few years ago. But still. Not my favorite activity. But I'm glad that you're getting out and getting active! I think that's the key, really.

Excellent! That looks like a simple enough plan that you will not mind sticking to, definitely. And can be done in your room while listening to Lady Gaga (must get some of her on my ipod for my own workouts, have decided, fabulous exercise music). Good for you, you can keep it up! Do it long enough and before you know it it will be your regular habit.

Yeah, I think I used to psych myself out thinking if I didn't do a lot what was the point? But 30 minutes of toning is more than I'm doing right now, so it's gotta do some good, right?

I've had similar "all or nothing" issues in the past. I think "oh, I don't have time to do an hour today" or whatever, so I don't do anything. Well, guess what? SOMETHING is always better than nothing.

In other news, I was talking to my friend who used to live in Chicago and he told me that it is better to stay downtown because it's a real pain to get in and out of town to do stuff if you are staying by the airport or the suburbs, etc. So I guess we should probably look around downtown. He also said if we pick out some places that look interesting or good to us then he can take at what we're considering and give an opinion.
