All tragedy boils down to the question "why do bad things happen to good people?" and "fate" is often the simplest/most comforting answer.

Things were bad before because the societal establishment told people that they were simply bad people, not sick. Things are bad now because the societal establishment tells people that they are sick, and not bad people.
