Have you seen Ayakashi the series? It's a series of 3 ghost stories, the last of which, Bakeneko, introduces the medicine seller.

Actually yeah. Only the bakaneko eps were any good though. That series was a HUGE flop in Japan..and America. But I have all three of the bakeneko eps and all of the mononoke eps...it's so wonderfully disturbing.

I think the other two stories were pretty good, actually. Just very much not typical anime fare.
