Free and Fair elections?

alienne posted this as a comment in a thread of ozarque's. Some of my flist already reads ozarque, but I'm nonetheless going to do my part to get this tidbit distributed as widely as possible. Especially to anyone who votes in Ohio [ahem].

Especially to anyone who votes in Ohio [ahem].

Ahem yourself.

Good advice. I have a cellphone camera and I know how to use it (well for stills, anyway).

And I'm making calls tonight through Tuesday for moveon.org....how about you?

I'm spending a little time working with a campaign here in CT. Unfortunately my own district is not a real race.

I don't like what I read about Ohio elections in 2004. Have you actually paid attention to what went on there?

I have no idea whether it made the difference in the presidential vote, but I have serious doubts that it was a completely fair election, and we'll never really know because Blackwell made it his business to make it nearly impossible for anyone to find out. Republicans are so very fond of the "If you have nothing to hide, why do you care if we ..." ploy. I prefer to apply it to governments.

That's why we have auditors. We can certainly hire auditors for polling places. The last thing I want is the average citizen on watch for improprieties. pb9617's law #1: People are stupid.

Our entire system of government and social ethos is based on the idea that average citizens are capable of self-governing.

Ok. Why is your mood set to "angry," though?

Because the thread I ripped this from got me thinking about the irregularities in OH, and the lack of mainstream reaction to the evidence that a lot of shenanigans probably did go on (and the certainty that legitimate impartial audit access was inappropriately denied), and that the man behind them has some possibility of ending up the governor in 2 days.

That part made me angry.
