When I've had to go to the courthouse for jury duty, that's about the same level of Security Theater we get here. Was your American friend suggesting that our systems are more or less insane than yours?

I don't think they were expecting my knitting needles to be okay when their bottle of Mountain Dew was not okay and had to be left outside with the security guards.

I went through security in the vatican once and had my bag turn on the metal detector.

"Signora...."

I pulled out my metal crochet hook. There's no way to reproduce the sound the guard made, but "Pshaw!" comes close enough, and I was allowed in...

At least in the big paranoid cities I frequent, I'm pretty sure they'd've taken the knitting needles.

I think your American friend must not have gone into a court or a legislature in the US. It's the same here/
