My parents ordered baby chicks when I was a kid through the mail. You can still do it: http://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com

We got 25 Rhode Island reds and all but 1 of the roosters became chicken soup, when the hens were our egg layers. Apparently you can order single-sex shipments now, which you couldn't do 25-30 years ago.

Dislaimer: IANAL and assume your LJ profile is correct. If your lot is 80000 sq ft or more, your town's municipal code allows you at least 15 small animals, which includes chickens. They must be housed 100 ft from any property line. If your lot's not that big there is an alternative: the code allows up to 10 rabbits on any lot of any size. The municipal code did not indicate whether or not you are mad.
