In praise of my 4x12 Marshall cabinet.

(warning: I suspect that only musicians -- and precious few of those -- will find this even mildly interesting)

For years I saw the 4x12 cabinet as the ultimate in poser overkill. Heavy, awkward and just too much gear for a small club, the 4x12 (usually a Marshall) would none-the-less emerge regularly from the touring vans of scruffy, hard rocking ( Read more... )

Cool! My dream amp is an Ampeg 8x10, but cheap used amps - especially bass amps - are hard to come by here. The ratio of young people with disposable incomes to musicians with no money is skewed to the latter.

Your post brings up a question that you might be able to answer. We are playing our first club show in a couple of weeks. It's a small venue that holds about 75 people. Should we mic the drums?

Those 8x10s are awesome for all the same reasons that I love my 4x12 -- it puts the bass on par with a baby grand piano. Makes it a big, musical force of nature.

You definitely shouldn't need to mic the entire drum kit in a club that size. If there is a sound guy, you might want to mic the kick drum and the snare for better control of your mix.
