Surf's Up! Now I need your help.

This move is inspired by a number of different things including my recent trip to Kauai, my love of ‘60s surf instrumentals and bachelor pad kitsch, a bad case of 'summer-itis,' Bob’s musical endeavor, and the thought ( Read more... )

For the love of all things sacred, promise me that you'll never do a Jimmy Buffet song.

How about Sleepwalk from Santo and Johnny. It's the only surf song that I find haunting and creepy in a way that I can't explain.

Well...I realize this project butts up against the tasteless, but frankly, Jimmy Buffet doesn't fit with the SoCal/surf thing...he's a Florida/Caribbean guy.

More than anything, I'm looking for songs with strong melodies that lend themselves to the surf treatment They'll be a lot of trial and error, but in the end, I hope I can come up with something that the tourist will dig but also causes the hipsters to sort of nod in appreciation.

After listening to a CD called Meshuga Beach Party, I've discovered that anything, including traditional Jewish songs, can be given the surf treatment. You should definitely learn Hava Nagila.

Come As You Are or some other Nirvana song would sound good surf-y.
And that entire Rhino CD of great surf instrumentals. The People love TV themes, I've learned. Don't know why, don't really want to figure it out, but any classic TV theme rendered surf will have them in the aisle, either laughing or dancing. I'm talking Brady Bunch, Rockford Files, Sesame Street, etc.

Too bad Los Straitjackets already took the Mexican wrestling-mask look, 'cause that's a good one.

Come As You Are...

But how would one distinguish it from Killing Joke's "the Eighties."

There are a few TV themes that are cool and would fit this style like Hawaii Five-O and Peter Gunn. The James Bond theme is another good one.
