Very famous actually. And he has pinched my lead female character's name. Shows one shouldn't dither with novel drafts for as long as I have. At least the surname of my character is different - but I was thinking of changing it to a shorter one (like the famous author uses! - just as well I forked out for his expensive book) because I can't ( Read more... )

If the writers is only famous it may not matter. It would only matter i think if the character became famous because the writer was so popular....

You are probably right about this. Because the character of the shared name is outweighed in his latest novel by another woman. This other female is already famous because he has not only used her in novels he has given lectures by her I believe. Not an alter ego perhaps, but obviously a 'voice' for him. And as you say my hoped for readership is a bit different from a prize-winner's.

"my hoped for readership is a bit different from a prize-winner's"

I did not quite mean it that way! I just meant that almost no one reads the books of these "famous" novelists. And people who are not interested in literature have not even heard of the novelist let alone the character. ;) So unless one is aiming directly at a literary audience, it is a pretty safe bet there would not be enough crossover to matter.

And remember not all prize winners are those literary types. Didn't someone give 'ol stephen king some prize in the last couple of years?

Yeah stick with the name, I'll never know the difference :)

(spoken by a representative of the occasional readers group - where literary knowledge extends to 'some bird wrote lots of harry potter books, and I look forward to the movie').
