good to have an astute ludwig observation. eric, a reclusive old guy lives beneath me, and paddy next door, a scoundrel who listens to the races and feeds the crows. the area where i live has traditionally had a lot of mens boarding houses and cheap accommodation for older guys. they are dying and young asian university students replace them. i buy their old stuff in charity shops: clothes, hats, vests with thousands of little holes; perhaps they are seeping through! sometimes i feel like i am becoming a ghost of their departure.

I might like your neighborhood. I inherited an overcoat from my great-grandfather, well worn and a rough woolen fabric. You couldn't find this coat today. It felt as though I'd inherited all the things that had happened in the coat when I wore, but as half-remembered events in the back of the brain. As though he had left fingerprints on me when it became my coat. I've never believed in ghosts, but I've always believed in fingerprints.
