I may not be going to Memphis next year. I've got a plan to figure out whether or not this is really the right decision for me now. My father really wants me to try to stick it out because I'm basically going to school for free, but I don't like the school here. The expectations aren't high enough. It's too easy to get by without much effort. ( Read more... )

So the school might not be so great, but Memphis is a good place to be, right? I don't want you to be indebted to the government all your life if you can help it... is there a way you could find a class or some kind of activity outside of school that would hold your work to a high standard?
School is certainly not the only way to challenge yourself.

I just thought I'd offer my two-cents.
Whatever you decide, I want it to be right for you! Because when it comes down to it, I love you arden.

Could you give me an example of such a class/activity outside of the school? The problem is that, in a field that is skill-centered, I actually need less outside of school. If I'm going to be good enough at this to make a significant career of it, it will be my life. I'd ideally like to be in a community of people like that. Here, I'm singled out for being oh-so-amazing, but I feel behind compared to the kids my age with whom I'll be competing for jobs.

Everyone here complains about the school and how they'll give a degree to anyone. These are the same people who allow themselves to coast by and be given a degree, as opposed to working hard and earning it. I don't want to be one of those people, but I also don't want to be noticed for actually working.

Does this make sense? I'm just testing my options. Cincinnati is a public school, so the price isn't astronomical (and then there will be, hopefully, some sort of scholarship).

Thanks for being concerned for me, Paige :)
