Back (in Black!)

Nov 27, 2012 15:44

After four weeks, I'm finally back home in my apartment! I came home Sunday night, despite pleas from Hannah and Josh that I stay for two more weeks, or how about fifty-two more weeks, or, as Josh begged, "nine more years, until I go to college!" Awww, kids ( Read more... )

That is one bad-ass bench. I'm glad you're back in your own place and that things are mostly okay. There's really nothing like going to sleep in your own bed.

It was so weird seeing how it just completely collapsed over the bathrooms like that, but the bench right in the middle refused to go down. It was also amazing how much sand we lost. The beach was so flat, completely swept clean. :(

I woke up Monday morning and I had to blink a few times before I remembered I was home. It was far too quiet! (Until some workmen outside started hammering and drilling shit, of course. Heh.)

Did your dad have any problems from the storm?

Nope, he was fine. Thanks for asking. :) Apparently his lights didn't even flicker.

Hey, I'll be in Queens from just before Christmas until just before New Years. If you and Jan will be around, we should do something!

Wow, so glad you're home! And glad that you had someplace to be in the mean time. Sounds like you are definitely Aunt of the Year!

The pix are horrifying... still can't believe this all happened.

♥ I'm glad you and your family managed to weather the storm without any major damage! My sis had a bunch of downed trees in her yard and throughout the neighborhood. I saw pics of the neighborhood and street where we grew up, and there were so many trees and poles down, it was unreal. All the sidewalks were ripped up from the roots, and the streets were end to end fallen trees. And I saw the pics of Seaside. The roller coaster and ferris wheel in the water were depressing, to say the least. And then all the people who lost their homes (and some, their lives. :( ) It makes the damage here seem less severe, even though there are still a lot of people in town without homes, and businesses that are still closed down. But it's getting better, so that's a good thing! Which reminds me - I need to call my insurance company tomorrow! :-P

But it is good to be home!

I read your post now. Jupiter was in Taurus? Funny, I didn't feel that one bit. (Bad joke cause I'm a taurus :P)

It was one of the gifts the wise-men brought baby Jesus.

I am so glad you can get back in to your place! What a terrible disaster, been thinking about you and the neighbourhood, the boardwalk. :( I hope Titti and the rest of the NY crew are ok, too! ♥

♥ ♥ Titti and the rest of the crew weren't in flood zones (despite Titti being close to the bay), though Beth had flooding at her house. :( I think everyone except musesfool who lives in Manhattan lost power for at least a couple days. I'm just glad my building is finally livable again (except for the people who live(d) on the first floor.) They haven't really started doing anything with cleaning up the boardwalk yet. That's going to be a massive undertaking, and I doubt they'll have it rebuilt by summer, but who knows.

Oh hun. I'm pleased you're able to move home and that your personal corner of the world isn't too disturbed. Obviously the outside world is in a bad way and there will be a lot be people really struggling. We were in a similar situation after the Christchurch earthquake and it's really weird. All you can do it get on with your life, and maybe volunteer at some neighbourhood help thing. If helps you feel better.
If you want to talk about living after a disaster, PM me. There is really no way that people who haven't been through it have any idea.
Take care. Enjoy having the internet again :)

I remember that earthquake and the state of your house. You definitely had it worse! I'm just glad I was able to stay with my sister and her family. Even though we didn't have heat for 9 days, and the only electric we had was for the fridge and a few outlets in the den, we had something and could charge our phones, use the coffee maker, and even plug in the TV and DVD player to watch movies. And we could cook because she has a gas stove, and we also barbecued. We were also lucky to have hot water so we could shower. (Though the bathroom was freezing! Hee!) Not getting cable/phone/internet back for another week and a half also sucked, but again, not a tragedy. We had movie night every night, and it was fun to watch things like the six Star Wars movies and the various Avengers movies with the kids. :) We even made Jiffy Pop popcorn on the stove ( ... )

We didn't really have it worse, not at the time. The house was livable and we somehow had all utilities, water, power, sewer (more or less) although we had to boil water for months and that gets really tired really quickly. So although the house was broken we were much better off than the thousands who were suddenly homeless. A lot of people were living with no water or no power or sewer for ages too. I had people come home from work with me to use the shower or fill their water containers ( ... )
