So tell me, dear flist, what would you recommend if I asked you for novels and film recommendations for the 18th - mid 19th century? I don't care what genre it is, as long as it all happens between 1700-1850. I also don't much care if the books were actually written in that period or if they are modern historical fiction. Give me your recs,

I'm reading the Patrick O'Brian books right now (I'm in the middle of the fourth book) and so far I really enjoy them!

I always meant to read some Jane Austen, but never knew where to start. Maybe I should just do like you sugested and start with the first and the last :D

I never heard of Evelina, I'll check it out, thanks!

I don't really know anything about Asian history and culture, apart from little bits related to European history, so I was always a bit afraid to read Chinese or Japanese books, for fear of beeing completely lost. But if you know something that might ease a complete n00b in the subject, I wouldn't mind pointers.

I always liked Ruth Hall by Fanny Fern, although that may be at the tale end of your desired time period. (If you haven't seen me before, I've been a long-time watcher.)

I never heard of it and my library doesn't even have it. Hmmm. I'm always most interested in what I can't get :D I'll see if I find it somewhere, thanks!

No contest: Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke. About English magicians (real ones!) in Napoleonic Europe. Amazing book. :)

Gah, why didn't your comment get emailed to me, when the others on the post did?

Anyway, I've had Jonathan Strange on my book shelf for years, but I've never got round to read it, even though I always intended to. I think the size of the hardback scares me - I can't carry it around, so I could only read it at home and this is unacceptable :D
Maybe I should just borrow the paperback from the library.

I second the rec for Jane Austen. My favorite of hers is Sense and Sensibility. The book and movie are both wonderful.

I'll try Austen! I always meant to, but some friend once told me that it was dreary and after that I was always a bit wary and more drawn by other shiny!

I've never heard of the George III movie, though I usually wach out for movies from that period on TV. I'll try to get hold of it!
I'll have a look at the others, too.

Thank you very much :)
