I am so sad for my Kirby girl today. She ran into something and cut her cheak open. It is just a little cut, but it still makes me so sad. I did some puppy first aid, but it hit me today...this is the rest of her life. There's no learning to use a cane, no going to get a guide dog. Today was one I will not forget anytime soon. I took a short walk with my Kirby, and together, we understood this is too hard for her. She stumbles over objects on the sidewalk and can only safely move us around obstacles if they are at her eye level. Today, I went down to the UW-Madison campus. I worked Dayton through the frequently trafficked sidewalks, and he moved fluidly around everyone. He has come incredibly far in the last few weeks! We crossed an intersection in which three streets came together. Dayton had to cross, find an angled ramp on the island and cross again. He handled it ( Read more... )

I worked Dayton down to the vet's office today. On the way there, we came across construction, and he handled it very well. We were walking up Johnson crossing Second. Dayton is pretty much my full-time partner at this point. He works where he's learned what to do, and we train where he doesn't. At this point, I definitely always have a cane along, but I rarely ever need it ( Read more... )
