so, I've been much more consciously fighting my old demons of lack of motivation and depression. I made a realization just moments ago, that I have to write down or Im afraid I'll forget it ( Read more... )

I know what its like to find oneself staring and not working...PM or IM me if you like, perhaps we might enlighten one another in ways to get past the motivation problems. I am cyclothymic, and have had to deal with lots of depression as well....

I spend a lot of time on the computer as part of work -- and I have various scripts that kick off every so often that prompt "what are you working on." I find it keeps me productive as there are far too many computer-related distractions.

If I'm working in the shop, I tend to be focused on what I'm doing to the exclusion of everything else, so the nudges aren't needed there.

I second this, as I force myself to come up with a "Today" list on my breaks every morning. I must complete at least one productive item before I reward myself with this or that slacker-type item.

Seeing everything listed out also helps put perspective on your workload. Sometimes there's really not as much to do as you think/feel/stress over... and what there is, once done, is done and over with... which gives you more time for the fun stuff. ;)

Balance in all things is key.

the problem with lists for me is that often times I'll have just one or two things on the list. like pull weeds in the front yard, and do laundry. so I think "hmm I have plenty of time! I'll just read some LJ!" and then 6 hours later I have 1 hour to pull weeds, do laundry, and then drive 30 minutes to pick grant up from work. its that kind of stuff i need to stop. on busy days i work like mad, and I often do have a list to work through, but its the quiet days with only a few things to do that always kill me :(

Two things still make a list... just a very short one. ;) So add the fun stuff on there too only, "Read LJ" would be at the BOTTOM and force yourself to start at the top. Crossing stuff off is incredibly satisfying this way too.

I've fallen into that trap many, many, many times... especially once I got out of school. You are responsible for you, and no one else. It's a lesson I'm still learning to put into practice... but it's the only way things are ever going to get better. Straight-up.

Arfs!
