as a texas girl i can tell you watermelons are as much "southern" convention as they are stereotypically black. as a kid i went to the high school football teams "watermelon scrimmage" every year of my life. (this is like a pretend game, pretense for the mound of watermelons to eat, later on, in the Sunshine.) also you are right in saying it's a pretty antiquated stereotype anyways, i think only college kids in Racism in the Media classes are quick with the association.
the most intriguing thing about these shoes, in my opinion, is the complementary colors. they are red and green and not christmas-y. the reason they are not christmas-y is because they're watermelons, but all the same the colors are good. no neutrals paired with neons, because that shit is played. instead they are basic color wheel. basic eats.
but i hate how thick the soles are? it seems 90's. and the strip of white ruins it some.
they make me think of monsters, a little bit. which would suit you.
i don't like the soles too much either but i've seen these vans in other colors and the soles seem to sort of succumb to the weight of your body and squish down a bit after a while, so hopefully they won't look platform-y for long.
yes if you'll wear them often! i love printed sneakers but i never wear sneakers cause they turn my feet into buttholes so at least let me live vicariously through you.
i fail to see how they have racist undertones. everyone likes watermelon
