so, can anybody think of songs that have to do with greek myth? i'm going for lyrics that refer to or describe some greek or roman myth, however abstractly. going for some extra credit in classical mythology class. i've thought of a couple...i'm thinking there must be something that mentions helen or paris or someone in the trojan saga, or ...like ( Read more... )

Hah, you're funny.
Well, smartass, I'm suprised you haven't thought of this, but howsabout, "Saturn ascends..." Saturn = Cronos, the oldest of the Titans.
There was that crappy pop song a year or so ago whose chorus called the Love Object his Aphrodite. Remember? Goofy blonde kid, played the guitar. Son of some more famous guitar player.
When's this due? Once I get going I'll be able to think of a bunch.

Hmm... I can think of a couple of Bob Dylan songs to research, can't think of their names right now. I'll get back to you.

Can it be strikingly "Greek myth" type themes, or do you really need Greek myth nomenclature?

yeah, i already thought of the grudge, and i may use a tea party song or two and say mid-east/indian myth is close enough. and, yeah, orestes...i think he took the name from somewhere else, but i can turn the lyrics into orestes' hostility toward his mother, definitely...it's extra credit, the deadline isnt till dec. 5th, so...keep 'em coming

Yeah, seriously, just use The Grudge. Choose one or ten.

"Wrapped Around My Finger" by The Police has the line, "Caught between the Scylla and Charybdis."
They Might Be Giants "Birdhouse in Your Soul" references Jason and the Argonauts.
Because the Smiths' song Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now contains the great line "What she asked of me at the end of the day - Caligula would have blushed".
Venus and Mars/Rock Show by Paul McCartney and Wings
Venus in Blue Jeans by Jimmy Clanton
Athena by The Who
Cream's "Tales of Brave Ulysses"
Tori Amos's "Pandora's Aquarium"
