Oh..my. From the angle, I'd say it was an african cichlid - a member of the mbuna. Bummer. In university I used to raise/breed mbuna, mostly malawians, but also a few non-mbuna tanganikans.
If that is mbuna, perhaps a pseudotropheus "zebra" or similar, remember they like bullet-proof hard water... tanganikans like their water even more hard, and more alkalai to boot (high Ph).
They were all cichlids. They were doing great, but now that you mentioned it, I know it's because I changed way too much of the water. I don't have soft water, but our city's water system is so good no one NEEDS to put in soft water-- which means, these fish don't like it!
Boo, hiss. I had 4 different kinds of cichlids in there... I don't know the names, I bought them by color! Today, every last died. The last one is still attempting his last breath, but he's floating around upside down most of the time.
I wasn't happy with these guys, though. I like the happy, friendly, NON-territorial types, I've decided. Time to go back to barbs.
WAY more than you want to know!heartmartJuly 29 2004, 02:58:55 UTC
I feel the need to confess....I have killed 4 tetras, 2 platys, 2 bettas, 2 snails and 3 small catfish (or maybe Chinese algae eaters ?) in less than a year
( ... )

Pleco's LOVE scrap food; at least mine does. When I just clean the tank, I drop down these flat pellets just for him, so I know he gets enough to eat. He eats it,and it reminds me of a baby with a pacifier, because it is just stuck to his mouth.
This is the first time I ever had a pleco that is growing big. Mine always died. But I think that was due to overeating. I would go buy one when the algae was bad, he'd clean the tank all up and then be dead! When my tank got bad again, I'd go and get another one.
I tried those chinese algae eaters and they were good for nothing.
My personal hell is angelfish. I cannot keep those to save my soul. But now someone told me that they don't like wood in the water, and I always had a huge piece of driftwood in there-- which, by the way, plecos LOVE. Now that I removed it due to it's disintegration, I may try some again.... just not the fancy-shmancy ones I did last time (at around $9 a fish or something) only to see them all dead in about a week. :(
