LJ vs Xanga

Aug 16, 2009 22:04

I've never posted on LJ.  I joined basically just to keep up with friends who are over here.  But now I see that some of my friends that were on Xanga are now moving more to LJ.  So I'm curious.  I've always been a fan of Xanga, in no small part b/c I can personalize my page to a degree (i.e., I can make it pretty).  I get a digest sent to my e- ( Read more... )

For me, the privacy settings are really the clincher. Having some control over who sees my content is invaluable. I blog so that I can share bits of my life and thoughts with friends who live far away. On Xanga, I often feel like I'm shouting into an auditorium full of friends, strangers and people I just really don't want to share with. On LJ, it's more like talking to a room full of my friends. Less important, but still awfully spiffy, are the filters you can set - I have can set entries to only be viewable by certain sub-sets of friends. This makes whining about my period, for example, or planning Xmas/b-day presents for D a lot easier ( ... )

For me it is the community. The LJ groups. I read several fun groups that are just for folks with interests similar to mine. Some are SCA related, like sca_snark, while others are not, like cat_macros.

I also like that I can customize my friends lists to show everythign I am subscribed to, or just my favorites, or just my buddies.

I also like the ability to insert things behind a cut so folks don't take up a lot of bandwith with a ton of photos or a long rant unless it is somthing you want to see.

Oops, I forgot, I also like the ability to insert things behind a cut so folks don't take up a lot of bandwith with a ton of photos or a long rant unless it is somthing you want to see.

Plus, you can delete a response if you said something stupid which is often handy for me :-P

OK. I give up. I should not be posting today, my head is obviously in the clouds.

I like that you can have an actual conversation on LJ without having to type @ a friend. Plus, because of the indents it is easier to follow that conversation.

I like the xanga interface better as well. I got on LJ because some of my oldest and dearest friends were on it and not on xanga, and I wanted to keep in touch with them. It's grown on me a bit, but I'm not ready to give up xanga.

Privacy settings/filters. I'll read Xanga, but I probably won't ever post to it again.
