Full props to you for sticking with Ruby City. It never worked for me from the start, which was so disappointing. I had some awesome plans for it and... sob. Might give Betenoire a try soon, though, dunno.

There is a certain level of universal awfulness to it that mainly comes from what an insufferable prick the main character is. And, also, the fact that the author can't write women so every female character is just kind of reduced to a sexist stereotype. And the fact that prose is bogged down with useless detail.
...Really, it's terrible on its own. Knowing the series just makes it more terrible.
