Middle-aged. You'd have to be incredibly fat, unfit and unlucky to need bypass grafts under the age of 40, but it does happe occasionally.

Yeah. I was thinking more about how long he'll have to live whilst scared of backpacks, tourists, sport, etc etc.

Surprisingly enough, nope.
It is, bizzarely, just icky and superficial - he's not septic or anything, it's just a mess, but not a life-threatening one.
