You could scuff it up the way ballerinas scuff up new slippers. Use a knife and scratch it as to rough up the surface but not to gouge it.
If you're following the guide from the link I had previously mentioned I believe it says how much you should use. I myself don't know as I have never done it before, but I've seen great results.
Oh, and I think you could darken your bag by spray painting it maybe? Like spray it on and then before it dries (after you've scuffed it up as to give it age and depth) you wipe off a bit of the excess and should get a nice result.

Luckily for you it seems that tie has a grain that goes at a bit of an angle, so you can follow that when you're painting.

I had a bit of a problem with bleed through but I was using a paint and a paintbrush. I think if you make sure you press the tape down hard ( I used masking tape ) and try to be a little gentle when you get to the edges, you should be okay. It may be a good idea to get some red paint/red paint pens for a touchup if need be, if you're that worried about it.

For the bag--maybe take an emery board/sand paper to it to create 'scuff'? I'm not 100% sure it'll work on whatever material that is, but whenever I need to scuff something or make it look worn and frayed, I just use that.

Also, if your Ron wants to look a little rumpled and second-hand, pat Baby Powder into his clothes. It'll make him smell nice and look dusty--that's what I did for my Remus stuff =P

If painting the tie doesn't work, either...just take electrical tape and stripe over it with yellow/gold electrical tape, as a last ditch method. I'm sure it'd work to keep lines straight. The Leaky Cauldron even has a tutorial on duct-tape ties, which is really nifty.

Oooh, I would NOT use the acryllic inks. You will, basically, have a wig that is wearable for one night only, at best. Get some red, orange, yellow and/or brown sharpies [depending on what colour you want and what colour the wig is- I can't really tell from the flash] and use the guts of those dissolved in the rubbing alcohol. Katie Bair has a good tut on this method but I foolishly don't have it bookmarked. Here's a cosplay.com thread on the same. It's got some dramarama further down, but the first thread inicates the basic process- you prettym uch just have to experiment ( ... )
