Riders on the storm

This past Saturday afternoon, a man called to say a mother mallard duck had been killed by a cat while she was sitting on her nest. He was livid. He'd been watching her sitting on a bunch of eggs for some time and hated the thought of an entire generation wiped out. We asked when she'd been killed. Bless you! There are few things more adorable than a baby duckling.

And grrrrr on those cats! I love cats but they need to stay indoors! We had two robin's nests last year that were raided by our neighbor's cat. One was right by the front porch, so we stopped using the front door and put a sign up so the mailman would come round the back, and that stinking cat let them get just big enough....

I so totally agree. Cats and wildlife just don't mix. And this is exactly the kind of thing I point to when people shrug and say "Well, it's just Nature's way." Nature had nothing to do with it.
