I definitely think that this is an important step. As many people have pointed out, simply saying that I'm Atheist doesn't really define any set of values, it simply defines something that I don't believe in. Having such a large group, with no real values attached to it, presents a huge problem in the form of opening one's self up to manipulation and guilt by association. There is importance in saying that, not only do we reject your assertion of a deity but, among those who I choose to be associated with, we also believe in the inherent value of a person, that all individuals deserve to be treated with respect and dignity, and that a rational view should be applied to all aspects of life, not just the spiritual
