Everything taking me at least twice as long as it ought to at the moment, on account of my addiction to endlessly refreshing the same twenty or so web sites. How to break this awful circle? Anyone got any tips (yes, 'unplug the net' is a good option. but not feasible for much of the time since my new job involves using FTP quite heavily, plus I ( Read more... )

See I've just decided to call that multi-tasking, and not think about it again.

I wouldn't mind so much if i actually enjoyed the endless refreshing! (Heads off for bout of recrimination in bathroom mirror). It's just - well, you know what it is. I type three words, then go and see if someone has posted anything on LJ; then I type, oooh, maybe another 5 words, and go and check the birdwatching site, and then another 3 words and check LJ again. And then I stuff my face! Argh. End result: work that should have taken 3-5 hours has taken at least 10...

Incidentally I don't think I can come to ICFTS as I have a seminar paper to write and it needs to be done that weekend; are you likely to be up in London any time soon/before Christmas, or too embedded in writing?

This I do every day too....and I even try and stop it by turning off the internet connection...but, well, then I can just turn it back on can't I? I think perhaps it's just a sign that we'd both rather be spending our time doing something else?!?

Sorry that you can't make ICFTS..I will be up in London before Christmas definitely, we should pick a pub and start early...

Where o where would you get DISCIPLINE from the internets? lurid_archive October 21 2006, 05:09:30 UTC
I find that actual breaks, where you allow yourself to surf, play, or generally indulge yourself work quite well. I often think that if work is taking you a long time, its worth asking if you are working too hard. Long hours without a break is hardcore and all, but isn't always the best use of time.

Aargh, I have no idea (and see, even now I am on LJ rather than writing). I have a daily word limit, Mon-Weds that I count down, word by word, as I skip merrily between websites. But then I wouldn't be doing my PhD if it wasn't for the internets and teh pr0n so...um, somthing.
