Does anyone who reads Latin fancy checking my translation? I don't expect it to be anywhere near accurate, I have only had one class and suspect that I have got all my tenses (and everything else) wrong - I just want to know whether I'm approaching the correct meaning...

Actually too tired to focus on this, but will try to come back to it ASAP. What's it in aid of?

Just one thing to start with - "decipiuntur" is a third person plural (the -nt) and a passive (-ur). So, it's not the whale that is doing it. Try flipping the subject around...

It's just a beginners' Latin class (medieval and Renaissance Latin) for historians - we seem to be going at breakneck speed and, though I have a primer, I can't quite keep up.

I put it up because I thought people (well, you primarily) might be amused by my fumblings, not because I actually expect you to provide all the answers - that would be v. cheeky...

Well, I don't know any other way of helping than doing it, so give me a few more hours (I have to work, boo, hiss). I did most of it on the train in - with a dictionary. There are a few bits giving me grief, but nothing too major. The few tricky things are the constructions - several awkward subordinate clauses, I think, and present participles you can't quite translate literally.

"how ships are snared" - basically, yes, but I think "deceived" or "tricked" might be more fitting.

Will get back to you when I've had a look at my version. I won't post it, but I can't really help without having something to compare to - hope it'll be useful.

Finished my go on the bus in. Think I solved some of the things you put in square brackets, but it's definitely not 100% - sure Haus can provide a ruling. Would you like to see it?
