I have the Canon Digital Rebel XTi. I LOVE it. I am, in general, a Canon fangirl, and this is yet another fantastic piece of equipment from them. There is a newer model about to come out (or maybe it's already out?), so do some research to see if you want to shell out for the newer one.

i was leaning towards a Nikon, but i was looking at the Rebel XTi, so thank you for your input!

I second the XTi vote. If you go the SLR route it really is a great camera. Of course right after I got mine the new XSi came out. It is a more expensive option at this point but if you have the budget for it I am sure it would be a great choice as well. There is a bit of a learning curve if you haven't shot much with an SLR before but they are more capable than I am at this point.

As for point-and-shoot cameras there are so many great options out there now. My roommates got a Sony for Christmas and it takes great pictures with ease. They also have a Nikon D70 that is an excellent camera as well. I had a hard time deciding between Nikon and Canon. They are very equally matched with only minor details separating them. I bought my camera about 4 years ago. It's a Canon PowerShot A80. I like that I can swivel the screen any direction so if I have to take a picture at an odd angle, I can still see what I'm taking a pic of.

yeah... all the camera-goodness in my life is of the "small pocket quick-shot" variety... so I'm not much "practical help". I have read some good stuff about the newer Nikon DSLR (D-60?) but when I look at what people are shooting with... it's almost always a Rebel.

I've used loads of different cameras, and my preference these days is for a compact. SLRs are wonderful if you're intending to make specific trips to take pictures, and want to spend the time getting everything just right. But for me, a compact slips into your pocket, and is always there when you need it.
My current camera is a Canon SX100IS, which has 10x optical zoom, and is excellent quality for the price. It doesn't have too many manual options - I think the S5IS is the equivalent with all those, although it's a little more bulky.
My last 4 cameras have been Canons, and I'd highly recommend them.
