gift suggestions from you writers

My dad's recently been talking about retiring on an island and becoming a writer.  When I asked what he liked to write about, he replied," I don't know. . . . I like sports."  So this whole thing might just be an escapist fantasy, but I'd still like to get him a nice writing related gift for his upcoming birthday.  Do any of you writers or story ( Read more... )

Georges Polti's "The Thirty Six Dramatic Situations" is a good springboard.

Does he realize that writing is just as hard as anything else? It's not romantic at all. You have to sit down for hours each day and just work at it.

I'm not sure what about writing appeals to him, since I've never known him to write more than a few very casual sentences in emails. I suspect he's just fantasizing about something completely different from his current EE middle management position. He is only 50, so he has a lot of time to work it all out before retirement.

In english class for high school we had to read this book about how to write stories called bird by bird that was fabulous
