Pro-life: this word does not mean what you think it means

Feb 02, 2012 19:24

The Susan G. Komen Foundation has decided that its principles force it to deny cancer screenings to poor women. Of course, their CEO makes over $450,000 a year, so maybe they don't realize how vital Planned Parenthood service are to women who not only can't afford basic healthcare, but live in areas where there may be no other option availableI ( Read more... )

Yeah, I've been watching this whole thing explode, and it's so very frustrating. I think the Komen Foundation has moved away from its apolitical stance.

Especially now that they are pulling funding from pro-embryonic stem cell research centers.

And go after other organizations for violating their copyrights on things like "For the Cure." They're willing to partner with KFC, but not Planned Parenthood. A huge percentage of the money they collect goes to administrative costs and "education," said education of course encouraging people to donate more.

Oh, and since your subject line just reminded me, Tyson said the other night, "You know, it's only in America that you'd see a car with a pro-life bumper sticker right next to an NRA bumper sticker without a trace of irony."

And of course, I had to agree.

You've got a smart husband there:)

I used to chat a lot with the ex-nun who was half the Theology Department at my Catholic college. (The other half was a gay priest. It's crazy to realize how much more progressive the Church seemed in those days.) She told me that when people would try to get her to sign petitions to bring back the death penalty, she would point out that her pro-life values didn't allow her to do that. She got a lot of uncomprehending stares.

He's a keeper!

Oddly enough, one of my cousin's close friends is a gay priest. (Or almost a priest. He's nearly through seminary, I believe.) But from what I understand, the church's current position is that you're reformed, and are no longer gay. IDK.

But I love that response from the nun! That's awesome. And I would happen to agree with her.

If I understand correctly, the Catholic church's position is that being gay is not a sin, but acting on it is. :-) So if he's celibate, as priests are suppose to be, than that shouldn't be an issue.

I know, it's crazy.

This whole thing is very disappointing, but I shouldn't be surprised, really.

You'd think we'd be inured to this, right? I've always considered the marathons and other events a very inefficient way to collect donations, but assumed that the real goal was increasing awareness. Well, we've had our awareness raised this week.

The only good thing about this is the windfall it's generated for PP.

Well, that, and laughing at that bitch's horrible cosmetic surgery.

And all the news articles letting people know just how much PP does and how little of it is abortion services.

The more I learn about SGK, the more appalled I am.

I read that the whole thing really gained traction when they hired a vocal abortion foe as ceo.

Jesus, how about hiring a cancer foe? The whole thing is blowing my mind.

Not just any abortion foe. One who ran for office in Georgia on a platform that included defunding Planned Parenthood. But the decision isn't political...

The decision has also been reversed, but SGK is still toast. They've pissed off the pro-choicers and now the anti-choicers will be pissed. Lots of donations will be going to better charities.

This whole thing makes me so irritated, and honestly a little scared. Also, did you hear about how in my state (Virginia) they just rushed through a bill that forces women having an abortion to go watch an ultrasound? I mean... that just seems like going so overboard. Like you're just further punishing the poor woman - being extra cruel to her.

I swear I don't understand what's happening in this country sometimes. It really does feel like there's a war on women right now.

They're passing these laws all over. I think it's in Texas that you have to have the ultrasound a full day before the procedure, adding to the expense and probably making the whole thing impossible for poor women who have to travel to a clinic.

But the state senator who tried to add a rider to force men to have an unnecessary and uncomfortable procedure before getting Viagra is a hero. Unfortunately, the point seemed lost on many others in the legislature.
