Mediators are like lawyers but don't have to abide by adversarial law. The idea is that they can cut to the quick, well...quicker. They don't need to prepare a case for trial, which most divorces never get to- they are by and large settled before hand.
Instead all time is spent on finding a settlement that both parties can live with. Building a case against one another is time and cash consuming and brings out a whole lot of hurt and anger. Frankly I have enough of both already. It is supposed to be faster, cheaper and less painful. Canada encourages it for most divorces. I can always go to a lawyer later if it doesn't work out. I really don't think that Tim realizes how expensive it is to divorce a wife in New Jersey. I have a lot of rights to spousal support and a piece of his bonus/stocks/dividends and all other work related perks and investments. Oh, and health insurance, a right to retrain ect. Last time we spoke he was hoping for a one time pay off. That is not realistic.
