I enjoyed all the Barbara Pym's I've read! She describes such a peculiar little world, the twilight of a lost world, the last rectory drawing rooms and parish hall parlors. And what a mastery of understatement, often droll but very subtle and very dry. And I agree with what you wrote about there being no big laughs or guffaws, just many "passages that made me smile." It made me smile too. Such a quiet little book, and no, I wasn't wildly impressed either, but I did not feel that reading it was a waste of time. Pym's world is a relatively benign place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there.
