"Used hotmail" or "Any recommendations"

I'd like to open a new email account, but I don't know much about what's out there these days. I've used hotmail for ages, but I want something different. Maybe gmail but again, I don't know that much about it. Anyone have any recommendations or any that they like better than others?

I still have my Hotmail account, but I also have a Gmail account. Gmail isn't bad, you create labels (like livejournal's tags) that you can use to sort things with. I don't use them much because I can't remember / haven't found how to access them on my phone.  With the phone version it automatically sorts some emails into a social and a promotions "folder". I can't remember if it does it on the desktop version. You get decent storage space with Gmail.

Awesome! I kinda remember using gmail a little bit when you crated the Molly Grue account for dreamoftomarrow, but I didn't do much exploring. Thanks for the info!

Definitely gmail. I've had my account since gmail first came out in 2004 (it was invitation-only back then!). Like pegasi1978 said, it'll sort stuff for you (you can turn on the promotional/social sorting options in the settings for the desktop version), lets you use various tags and folders, and has pretty decent storage space (including cloud storage for general files called Google Drive). It also syncs up pretty easily with Android and iPhones. I've used it almost exclusively for the past 11 years (I have a hotmail account but since MSN Messenger kicked the bucket, I kind of stopped using it), and my university email account uses gmail as well, so I use it both personally and professionally.

I don't have a terribly intelligent phone, and I don't really trust the cloud thing, so those features don't really "sell" it for me. But I think I may try it out, anyway.

Thanks!
