Reading Update

Aug 15, 2014 20:45

So initially I planned to post in depth menaing of life look at my intelectualism reviews of books, until I realised it would take me all night to do that. So instead, here's a list of stuff I've read recently (these last two months or so) and short bursts of reaction.

No Spoilers Be Herein )

catching up

I think Alenka can trashtalk Divergent with way more flair than me - I've only seen the movie, and what I saw I filed under "phenomenally stupid" XD And I don't know why you feel so bad about Fault in Our Stars - I decided not to read it altogether just by summary alone *laughs* On the other hand, the author himself is not too bad - Danya likes his crash courses in history videos on youtube. I saw a couple of them, they were funny enough. And I still don't feel like reading FioS :P

I haven't read any more of divergent since writing those I'll def talk it with Alenka once I'm done. Need to let the feels out after struggling through it. Seriously, I don't know whether to feel good that these books make kids read or despair at the quality of teen/tween literature these days.

Re FioS YAY now I don't feel so bad reading through these comments. I'm not heartless, just old XD Also, I didn't know the author did crash course in history on youtube. I like those too!

L keeps trying to convince me to read Divergent and Fault in Our Stars, both of which she really liked, but so far I haven't succumbed. But I did just watch the Divergent movie on my plane ride back, so thanks for the Honest Trailer link, very timely! :D

Honest Trailers usually hits the nail on the head! I wouldn't recommend either, no disrespect meant to L. FioS really, really wasn't my thing. I didn't even dislike it/was offended personally by it like I was with 50 shades. It was just plain boring.

Does the Rogue Prince have any Bloodraven action? If so I could make an effort to squeeze it in between journals. I'm already behind on GRRMs historical stuff. Bah.

Nope, that was before Bloodraven's time, sadly. It's to do with how Aegon 2 and 3 came into power. Bloodraven was a bastard of Aegon 4's. :(

I did, in fact, trashtalk Divergent to my heart's content in this post, but it's super-spoilery, so if you intend to continue with the series, don't read it yet :) I laughed heartily at the Honest Trailer, because YES. Except instead of calling the system/world order overly complicated I call it nonsensical ( ... )

Ugh, sorry for the late reply. Life's been kicking my ass so hard lately.

I'll def read the divergent trashtalk once i work up the energy to finish the book which looks ridiculious from all accounts.

Yeah, i felt the same way with FioS but the narration in addition to the set up really put me off. I dont even know if JG was going for us feeling bad for the kids or treating them like normal or what. On the whole it just left me feeling nothing which confirmed that I'm either dead inside or have higher expectation from bestsellers than expected.

Yay! Another Cormeron fan! I hear you on the boss/secretary thing, which is why I'm eternally grateful for the slow pace. Develop friendship/trust first before anyone jumps into bed with anyone! Its a shame your student doesn't like fantasy. But you were reading GoT a while back right? How did that turn out?

Still looking forwards to our Bollywood night whenever you have time. I hope things at work are getting better for you.

The trash talk is for the entire Divergent series, and I sort of doubt its entertainment/information value, but there are gifs! XD ( ... )

Yeah, its weird how ppl who've never read fantasy seem to view it. I recomended ASOIAF to a friend and she read them on her breaks at work but her co workers made fun of her when she told them it had magic and dragon - until she gave the first one to her boss. He had nightmares after all the incest, poor sod. I used to experience the same thing with Anime, namely ppl who hadn't seen it thinking animes were for kids, like children's cartoons. I'd like to see them try Van Hellsing. XD

No matter the pace or dedication of your students, i still count it as a plus that reading books is part of work. That's the dream! That's also why i loved teaching so much. I had to quit because "real job" was demanding too much of my time (partly why i've been so bleh recently).

I totally understand being unavailable, and there's no rush. This weekend sounds great. I haven't watched Hum Tum in a while too so it would be nice to rewatch it. :-)

See, lists are the thing! *nods*

I have no desire to read TFiOS because treacly/sappy teen fiction is not really my thing, and I don't really recall reading this sort of stuff in the days of yore when I was a teen. Hallmark movies are about my limit and those are only 2 hours, max. Also, probably won't be reading Divergent, either. I have not even read the Hunger Games, or even seen any of the movies. I am also "meh" about dystopias and even more "meh" about TEEN dystopias. Why yes, I AM a cranky old person. XD

Haven't read any of JKR's Galbraith books, but they are on my list (almost read Cuckoo earlier this month, actually). I'm probably not gonna try Casual Vacancy, just because it sounds depressing, tbh. I need something to go with depressing fiction, and at least a mystery perks it up a bit, imo. Otherwise it's just too much like real life, haha.

And that anti-list video was funny, thanks for sharing it!

You are so lucky (and blessed with the amazing foresight to not read anything in your teens you would be embarrassed to admit in your... now). I sadly have read a ton of crap, and not even being a teen covers most of it. I read Fifty Shades and I most certainly haven't been a teen in the last gazillion years.

I wouldn't recommend Casual Vacancy to anyone because I personally found it both droll and depressing. But do give the Galbraith novels a try, you might be pleasantly surprised. :)

KoA comes up with lots of funny stuff, they've done a couple of GoT skits too if you're interested.

Here, let me write you a novel in comment form XD ms_geekette August 27 2014, 00:07:02 UTC
I think I dodged a lot of teen fiction because I actually didn't read a lot when I was a teenager (especially in high school), other than school-related books. I was busy with band and other after-school stuff, one activity which was working in an actual library, lol. Unfortunately we couldn't read on the job. Most of the books I was seeing there was adult titles, too ( ... )

You can always write me a novel, darling! <3 missyquill August 27 2014, 03:28:52 UTC
My school (primary/middle/high) were crammed full of books regardless of what crap I was reading. Yes, I read Sweet Valley, I read R L Stine. I read Christopher Pike which I will admit to this day is kind of cool. I read Danielle Steel (which is not) and a hundred plus Enid Blyton books. I was the generation that grew up with Harry Potter too, and the one who saw Twilight in college and just went "nopenopenopenopenope ( ... )
