Of all the Manic Pixie Dream Girls, who are almost invariably insane, I think Eternal Sunshine does the absolute least amount of "fetishizing." In Garden State and a million other movies like that, the girl's sheer wackiness and lust for life is presented as the ideal solution to all the male lead's problems. The first time I saw the movie, I didn't like her at all, and the entire relationship hit way too close to home for various reasons. (Granted I was hung over at the time, and if there's one movie you should never first see hung over, that one's at the top of the list.) But I think she seems both complicated and real, and, possibly for the only time ever, so does Jim Carrey
