Good luck. You gotta be pretty funny, though, because the fact that by being a comedian you are implicitly saying that you think you are funny or have talent in making people laugh. Thus, if you are less than funny, people will think "he thinks he's funny, but he's not," then pity you/think you're weak or whatever.
Of course, if you don't give a shit about people's reactions or their opinions, none of this really matters. I think that's the way to go in life, and as a comedian I think it'd work.
What? I have to be FUNNY?!! Screw it then. I quit.
The whole "I want to try stand up comedy" thing results from a lot of prodding from my friends down here. I don't have enough of an ego to think that I'm funny enough to listen to without other people telling me on a fairly regular basis. In addition, I HAVE to be funny when pitching comdey ideas to studios (like I am doing NOW).
The stand up comic setting is a strange one though, people EXPECT you to be funny as opposed to just cracking wise in a social setting. Thankfully I have little public speaking anxiety so I only really have to worry about funny (and relatable) material.
Anyway, there's no way of really knowing how I'll do until I just DO it.
