I have a question that I relate to anyone who is willing to listen ( Read more... )

Those things are neutral, I think. If one looked at the world and saw some sort of plan or rhythm to healings like this, and if a large number of miracles showed up, then I could see belief in God as a reasonable conclusion. However, with all the death and misfortune visible in other countries (not so much here in America), I don't think simply assuming a controlling and loving God is a very straightforward conclusion. A fortunate, rare outcome of a situation doesn't necessarily explain God, given the presence of unfortunate, rare outcomes as well.

Scattered thoughts: it's late. You understand :).

I see what you mean, but I think you're missing my question or maybe I needed to make it more clear, either way it was late when I wrote it and it was late when you read it so I suspect it's a little of both ( ... )

If you've seen the movie Bruce Almighty, it gives a good example of why "God" can't answer everyone's prayers. It seems in your Uncle's case it's not just God he is denying. Because he is not acknowledging the great results of what did come of your cousin because he is now healthy and cancer free. Maybe he is focusing his anger and the blame on someone/something other than himself which isn't very fair. I honestly don't think religion is for everyone and that is just fine with me. But, I think it's crappy that he focuses on the fact that your cousin was terribly ill rather than thank goodness he's alive. Most people come around at some point though.

I'm very familiar with Bruce Almighty. It's a great movie, honestly one of my favorites. I use it all the time to illustrate points about prayer and free will. This isn't a question of prayer though. I said almost the exact same thing you said when I was talking with Katy a while back and I certainly believe what I said then as much as I do now. Intercessionary prayer (praying for miracles) is not very worthwhile as God would not give you anything that he wasn't going to give you anyway. Guidance and wisdom prayers are the most worthwhile for several reasons that I won't get into now. The above mentioned issue with my uncle is not about prayer though. He had no belief in God before the whole thing with his son happened, so it's not like his prayers went unanswered or anything. To my knowledge, he never offered any; but the rest of the family sure as shit did ( ... )

I think you need to think about god not as a person who grants wishes. God is everything including both life and death. I agree with what Ryan Escobar said as well. When you think about God you are dealing with something much greater than specific occurances.

How come everyone seems to think that I'm the one who has issues and questions with God here? I'm talking about dealing with OTHER people who have issues with God, and moreover people who have issues with God because of personal tragedy that I can't relate to.

i really don't know how to explain that one. In the past year my grandma died. And she was old so it wasn't one of those shocking deaths but it still hurt so much regardless ( ... )
