Closure

When I was about 10 years-old my cousin, Renia, found this book. It was all about a girl who dresses up like a boy so that she can become a knight. As a little girl who thought the boys had all the fun, it was an instantly captivating story. The only problem was that this was the first book in a series of four, and it was fantasy. Aw, that's really cool, Mistie! I've rediscovered stories I lost before, and it's always like meeting an old friend. Hopefully, it's still as magical as you remember it.

Our parents weren't as bad about all that as a lot of their contemporaries. Remember that Renia wasn't allowed to read The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Witch of Blackbird Pond or The Westing Game (because it had a little girl dressed as a witch for Halloween on the cover). And Katie Beth wasn't allowed to read To Kill a Mockingbird because of the "language." I don't remember our folks censoring what I read too much, although we did have a few conversations about what was appropriate to read on Sabbath and what kind of music I listened to.

Our parents were reasonable. Mommy and I actually had a long conversation maybe a year after this about fantasy. After that I was allowed to read fantasy. But by that time it was too late for that series. I probably remember it so well because censorship rarely happened in our house.
